Cytochemical studies using lectin-colloidal gold complexes could allow us to localize sugar residues in the ultrastructural level. We applied this technique to rat tracheal mucosa in order to identify the binding patterns of wheat germ
agglutinin-gold
complexes in the ultrastructures of respiratory epithelial cells and performed transmission electron microscopic examination. We concluded that secretory granules of secretory cells, microvillar glycocalyces of epithelial cells and mucous
blanklet
were
labeled abundantly by WGA-gold particles.
